about
Bandung's very own gloom-and/or-doom quartet formed in 2009 by campus buddies Haikal Azizi (vocals/guitar), Mirfak Prabowo (bass guitar), Bob Edrian Triadi (guitar), and Risyad Tabattala (drums), initially taking on the name LOUD and started writing songs while frequenting campus shows altogether before changing their name to Sigmun in 2011 and releasing songs on their own.
With Bob Edrian leaving the group in 2010 replaced by Nurachman Andika a while after, and Pratama Kusuma Putra replacing Risyad Tabattala on drums in 2011, Sigmun's early recordings feature a couple of different configurations of personnel, notably the 2012 self-titled EP (which was not released until 2013, and also alternatively dubbed “MMXII EP”) and their eponymously-titled track for the Indonesian release of 2011 film The Raid with The SIGIT's Rektivianto Yoewono as Mooner (as it featured Risyad Tabattala on drums).
After releasing a three-way split LP with SURI and Jelaga through Orange Cliff Records in 2012, Sigmun released their debut EP “Cerebro” through Yogyakarta-based net label Yes No Wave Music in 2013 and their 2012-recorded eponymous EP later that year through Cactus Records (now Tandang Records). Their 2015 LP “Crimson Eyes” was dubbed as one of the 15 Best Indonesian Albums by Rolling Stone Indonesia that year and managed to gain positive responses from critics, ultimately leading to a wider range of audience. Sigmun released two singles in 2018 and 2019, titled “Behelit” and “Minotaur” respectively.
Musically influenced by the Mighty Sabbath and the Zeps, their interest in Sigmund Freud concepts of unconscious mind and their love for the whimsical world of surrealism are evidently showing in their lyrics. Enjoying the exploration of absurdism and juxtaposition in their writings, Dali, Magritte and Chirico might have influenced them as much as Page and Iommi did, paintings made out of hazy poetry and heavy echoed chords.
lyrics
In the valley of dream
Where the sunlight's always dim
There stands a man you've never seen
His spoken words goes through the wind
"What if I take away your life?"
"What if I take away your sight?"
"What if I burdened you in fear?"
"What if the answer's never clear?"
Voices in your head
As the blue sky turns to red
You'll find the man was laying dead
In the valley of dream
Where the trees were never green
There comes a man you've waited long
With one last breath you sing the song
"What if I take away your life?"
"What if I take away your sight?"
"What if I burdened you in fear?"
"What if the answer's never clear?"
Voices in his head
As the blue sky turns to red
He'll find yourself was laying dead
In the valley of dream
Where thousands men stuck in between
There stands a man who never wins
The curse it flows beneath his skin
