about
Recorded live at the City Hall’s Underground Bunker in Solo / Surakarta (formerly a Dutch Air Defence Agency building), which, local Surakartan Historian estimated, was built in 1941 and until present time, remains as the only underground bunker in the city, “Rotation Plasty” is Kuntari’s (Tesla Manaf) debut composition recorded in July 2019. Constructed by the Dutch during war times and conflicts with Japan (with initial theories of its being built in 1800s and connections to Freemasonry by the avid local conspiration-theorist upon its discovery), the bunker spans as long as 20 metres of concrete, empty space and with a constant width of around 2.2 metres, and was not discovered until 2012 and restored in 2017 by the local government, and is now being opened as a public space. Moving with a less-rogue approach in the implementation of his performance, Tesla meticulously went through the appropriate channels in securing the location for the performance and receiving the warmest of welcome from the local government. Along with Nur Handayani and Suci Ofita Dewi, local Surakarta Traditional Sinden singers acting as the collaborators, the composition was recorded with each performer positioned without any visibility towards the others, furthermore, with no prior rehearsal or coordination in terms of the composition itself. Rotation Plasty tells the story of a coerced adjustment of ones’ body, aided by science one’s immediate-surroundings’s adaptation. The lancing vocalisation of the Sinden singers through the blares of irregular, synthetic, processed sounds, combined with the bunker’s hollow, echoic nature, not essentially majestic, but due to the sectional egg-like resemblance of the actual space, adding a certain modulation yielding new sounds unable to be yielded elsewhere.
