about

Tempelhofer Feld historically was an area in Berlin used for military practice, and as a parade ground of the Berlin garrison. Tempelhof airport was built in 1936-1941 and used by the Nazis during World War II and later the ‘city airport’ of Berlin. Today it is a public Park which covers 355 hectares of the site of the former Tempelhof Airport, including its buildings and surrounding land, making it the largest inner city open space in the world. Over years, the old airport has taken on a life of its own, shaped by Berlin’s diverse population. In many ways, it has become an homage to the pre-Nazi days of picnics, sports, smoking&drinking and lounging around in the sun. Since the area opened for public use in 2010 it has been the topic of many discussions on how long term urban plans can be developed. The Senate is responsible for the official plans, but there are also a number of private initiatives staking their claims. With no independent body to mediate the planning, this conflict of interests has made it impossible for everyone to agree on a coherent structure for the site. In 2014, residents of Berlin voted in favor of a referendum rejecting the construction of housing and commercial properties on the site. The initiative argues that the park should be left entirely as it is, due to its importance as “a leisure space, cultural and historical memorial and conservation area for plants and animals” .
grau& entered this scenario with a fully battery supported electro-acoustic set up, and got lost in an immersive, meditative, dark, yet playful jam session, while the sun set over the field. We are creatures of late capitalism and we love to bring our weird, noisy sounds to these few islands that are left for us, where we can just be and create and explore freely. we love to beat our drums and scream into the void and we need these empty spaces, unproductive spaces, wastelands and wide deserts without houses in order to feel home. There is a sense of limbo hovering over the Tempelhof site today; a feeling that this free-thinking Utopia cannot last forever. While some welcome the money being poured into the area, others are less keen, perhaps wary that the current plans may only represent the start of the redevelopment work, and that in a few years, the park may be gone for good.
