about
Gowa is the moniker for electronic music composer Lody Andrian, vocalist-guitarist for thrash metal unit Fakecivil and synthesizer for post metal group Amerta. In contrast to the two aggressive metal bands he joined, Gowa was born with the aim of building cinema in our heads, an exploration of imagination with stimulants of musical sounds and narrative conflicts. Like the score of a movie that never existed.
Gowa's debut full-length album Sindikat Egrek Merah (Red Sickle Syndicate) is indeed a hauntology record, about the revenge story of a group of vigilantes seeking revenge for a mass massacre over palm oil land. The twelve instrumental compositions that are presented in it brutally drag us into life, playing role after role in the plot of a slasher film.
In order to spark emotion in each of his compositions, Gowa synthesizes many musical elements, both classical, tribal and modern. We can hear how Indonesian instruments such as kendhang, tambourine, or gamelan with pelog tunings are combined polyrhythmically with the aesthetics of electronic music to leave an immersive impression; sucks us deep into cyberspace. Meanwhile, in other songs, the traditional Malian guitar scale brings out complex rhythmic layers, prompting our minds to dance and shudder at the same time.
“This is a romantic criticism of oligarchy. Sindikat Egrek Merah is the ghost of resistance, they will never die. I believe we can pose a threat through supernatural myths, because fictional narratives are much more powerful than scientific research.”
